With the aim of revitalizing public life in Jalpa de Méndez, Tabasco, an urban masterplan was developed for SEDATU to renew some of the city’s most significant public spaces: the High-Performance Sports Center and the Manuel Vargas Izquierdo Stadium. Both interventions are conceived as part of a single sports complex, creating continuity between their programs and circulation routes.

The High-Performance Sports Center is defined by a sequence of monumental concrete fins that establish the scale and character of the complex. Their geometry creates a series of covered and open spaces that provide shade, encourage natural ventilation, and mediate between the sports areas and the surrounding public space.

The program is organized within the intervals between these structural elements, accommodating circulation, gathering areas, and spaces for different sports activities. Rather than treating structure and program as separate systems, the project brings them together within a single framework that organizes the complex while generating intermediate spaces for gathering and everyday use.

During the design process, the team worked with future users to identify activities that had not initially been included in the program. This exchange led to the incorporation of additional spaces, including a skatepark, broadening the range of uses within the complex and responding to existing patterns of use among younger members of the community.

The project’s materiality also establishes a relationship with its context. The concrete takes on a tone that echoes colors found in the region’s architecture, while the construction of the fins drew on the knowledge and experience of local builders. A horizontal formwork system using phenolic plywood was developed for their construction, allowing the molds to be reused, reducing material waste, and improving the efficiency of the building process.
